What Happens To Your Body Within An Hour Of Drinking A Coke
Source: http://nutritionresearchcenter.org/healthnews/?p=140
Don’t drink cola if you want to be healthy. Consuming soft drinks is bad for so many reasons that science cannot even state all the consequences. But one thing we know for sure is that drinking Coke, as a representative of soft drinks, wreaks havoc on the human organism. What happens? Writer Wade Meredith has shown the quick progression of Coke’s assault.
The main problem is sugar. It’s an evil that the processed food industry and sugar growers don’t want people to know about. Even dietitians, financially supported by sugar growers and sugary product manufacturers, are loathe to tell us the truth.
When somebody drinks a Coke watch what happens…
In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this particular moment)
40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
>60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
>60 Minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
>60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.
So there you have it, an avalanche of destruction in a single can. Imagine drinking this day after day, week after week. Stick to water, real juice from fresh squeezed fruit, and tea without sweetener. |
So there you go, if you are struggling to give up your favourite carbonated high fructose sugar assult, there is a list of a few reasons why it's a bad idea to drink it! Of course, since a can of cola is around 140 calories, if you have 2 a day and stop drinking them you should lose a pound of fat a week from that simple change!
Sugar = More Addictive Than Cocaine!
A recent study using our rodent friends found that when given the choice between a button that delivered a dose of cocaine or a drip bottle full of sugared water, the rats chose the sugar!
Interestingly, when the sugared water was replaced with sweetened water, they STILL chose the water. This is something to consider when choosing drinks for instance, do you have water or diet coke? Apart from the other drawbacks to diet coke, it will give you a 'hit' of sweetness, which will lead to cravings for more sweet stuff. You certainly can reduce cravings for sweets, and one of the best ways is to not add sugar or sweetner to food or drinks, at least during the initial stages of battling a sugar addiction.

A Reminder About Running
You've heard my opinion about running in a previous newsletter - some of you may have agreed, some may have thought I was mad - what kind of personal trainer doesn't like running?!
Well, here is another opinion from a recent article by Rachel Cosgrove (co-owner of one of the most successful PT studios in the US)
The average woman starting a fitness program has no business running. That's right, no business running!
Running is an extremely advanced exercise. Yet most people who decide to start an exercise program start running from day one. Maybe they saw a picture of themselves they didn't like. Or a picture of a figure competitor and decided that's what they want to look like. Whatever it was, something motivated them to get active. And the next morning they're off on a run to jumpstart their fitness quest.
Most people think running is a good starting point for their fitness program. On January 1st you see hundreds of New Year's Resolutioners hitting the streets to start their new year right!
When did running become the starting point for someone who wants to get in shape? It drives me crazy when I hear, "I want to come to your gym, but first I'm going to start running to lose some weight."
I just want to shake them and say, "Don't you realize, running is hard and very advanced. And it's extremely ineffective as a weight loss modality. You'll end up coming to me three months later weighing the same, but with an injury from your running." |

Precision Nutrition Tip of the Week
Tip #5
The 10% Factor
by Dr. John Berardi
If some people eat one food not on their plan, their failure to be perfect sets in motion a psychological chain of events that leads to frustration and the inability to get right back on the plan. The all-or-nothing mentality sets in and BAM, they're back to nothing. But it doesn't have to be this way. 100% nutritional discipline is never required for optimal progress. The difference, in results, between 90% adherence to your nutrition program and 100% adherence is negligible. So allow yourself the extra 10% wiggle room. This will allow you the freedom to eat a few extra things not on your menu without the guilt and subsequent crash.
